If you talk to through-hikers of the Appalachian Trail, you'll find a special regard for their time in New Hampshire. Aside from it's breathtaking beauty, there's a series of seven high-mountain huts maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Club. These huts are staffed from about June to October, offering meals and a bed for an immodest price. In winter they are open on a self-serve caretaker basis, no meals, just the bed part. At the end of August, the seasonal workers (i.e., college students) go back to school, and the AMC shifts people around to man the huts. At Lonseome Lake Hut, there was a mostly new "croo" to take care of us. New to the hut for that time, but experienced veterans all. Taylor has seven years with the AMC, in addition to a degree in Biology.
