Terence

He sold me shoes - running shoes. And for a guy who's "around" 200 lbs., the shoes make a difference. So his advice was invaluable. And he was so cool to let me take his portrait out on the street in front of the store with another salesman and the Saucony shoe rep looking on from behind me. He had a natural grace in front of the camera - a little self-conscious, but that helped to create a dignified look.

John

A young man from Manchester, England who is staying here as part of the Challenger Sports club training program. Barrington Youth Soccer has contracted to bring in these guys from England to provide professional coaching. They stay with host families and coach a few teams. It's been a great program for the kids and I'm sure the young guys they get to come over enjoy it too. A great way to see (our part of) the world. John's coaching my daughter's team.

Greg

There were some lighting challenges here, from a harsh sun to a shading hat and glasses that hold you away from the eyes. We were watching a track meet (our sons both on - his son is here and his wife is here) and catching up on what's going on. What's going on for Greg is that he's starting to pursue a disc jockeying opportunity with URI's radio station. You can hear him from 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning. You're never too old to chase the dream ... Good luck Greg!

Mark

Cheating here. Not my photo. My wife took this shot and a fine shot it is. This is our nephew, Mark, on the way to the prom - pre-picking up the date. He certainly looks a lot better than I did at any of the proms I attended (powder blue tux? All white!? - yeah, it was bad ...).

I coached this young man in baseball before he became a hulking and powerful teenager. Another renaissance man with a touch with music, sports and academics. His mother, an artist, has been featured on this blog already. His dad will be too I'm sure. Great folks.

Ben

Dude sold me my new phone, which I hate but it's only because it's new and different than my old one. The reflection in the glasses needs to be handled better.

George

The founder and proprietor of Eats - a luncheon place in Seekonk, Massachusetts. He's been there for something like 20 years I'd guess and is about as nice a guy as you can imagine. He's out front taking orders, making the weiners, greeting the customers, making sure the place is clean and everyone is happy. If you are in the area, go there now. Right now.

Matty

A teacher and track coach/official for years in Rhode Island. I met him today at the track meet and was introduced to him by my father-in-law, Bill, who'd worked with him for years.

Dan

Soccer father. After the game, I grabbed this quick portrait - didn't even make him put the coffee down.

Tom

Falls into the stranger category. Tom is a local driver for the Acura dealership. I brought my wife's car over for service and got a ride home from Tom. A nice little semi-retirement job.

Maria

Should have used a little fill flash here to bring her out of the shadow of the overhang. Maria has been doing our taxes for almost a decade now. That kind of continuity is rare nowadays.

Shaun

According to my mother, Shaun is an angel. She's a home health worker and has brought my mother through thick and thin.

There's nothing quite like the sidelight that a window creates in a dark room. All that's left is to wait for the right expression.

Madeline

Sometimes, I wonder what the family thinks of me as I constantly point the camera at them. I have found that they are better about maintaining the expression that drew me to them, rather than flashing a smile or changing what they are doing. The light was nice (window to the right) and it looked good to me.

Stephen

Never at a loss for words, and full of stories and book ideas. Here's a look into his worldview. Now that summer's almost here, you ought to be able to find something here to quench your thirst.

Leslie

Natural light from a window again. If you have to be inside, then you can't beat it. Look at those pearly whites - you'd think she was a dentist. Oh, right, she is.

Woodrow Wilson (Alston)

The whole class had a biography fair - all presidents, and a few first ladies. He's ready for the Peace Prize.

Deb

What does this say about Deborah? What can it say? Does it change the picture to know she's an artist? RISD alumni? I don't know. I do know that it was a cold and raw day for a track meet and she and I have spent many days and evenings bundled up like this.

Kellie

The warm setting sunlight makes this a nice image, but the expression, the presence in front of the camera, makes it an interesting one. You can't teach that. Or can you?

Travis

And the winner is ... Clemson. Forestry perhaps is the major. There's something about taking a portrait of a teenager that no other age group has. Are they indulging you by being present? They're open to it, but reserved? Not sure.

Moira

People, family, whoever, come to my house and I suddenly leap out at them with camera in hand. "Come into the backyard, I need to take your picture." Tentatively they come out. I suggest the spot for them to stand. I don't give a lot of direction. "Serious." "Neutral." "Only smile if you want." It's over in seconds.
